Guided by a high-level Diversity Steering Committee, several steps are being taken to increase the diversity of our workforce. Virtually all U.S. employees have participated in a learning activity to help them develop awareness and techniques for resolving real-world diversity issues. A staffing manager is focused on increasing recruitment at colleges and professional organizations such as the Society of Women Engineers and the National Black MBA Association. Our U.S. online Job Opportunities System has begun posting higher level positions, encouraging qualified women and minorities to apply. The feedback has been very good on our formal mentoring program. In late 2004 we organized two leadership-development conferences for women and minorities that were uniformly and enthusiastically well received.

Praxair takes a multi-pronged approach to providing leadership and career-development training and to increase the diversity of our workforce. Employees are systematically identified for three levels of training: career development; middle-management development; and global leadership. In addition, the company has a goal of training all professional and management employees worldwide in Six Sigma methodologies by the end of 2006. Furthermore, an increasing number of technical and other kinds of topic-specific courses are being made available, either online or through internal or external seminars.
